London clears a hurdle for driverless taxis: Wayve and Uber secure TfL licences ahead of summer robotaxi launch
Transport for London has granted private hire vehicle licences to Wayve's autonomous cars, moving the British company and Uber a decisive step closer to launching the capital's first robotaxi service. Early rides are due later this summer, with a human safety driver on board at first.
London has moved a decisive step closer to putting driverless taxis on its roads. On 5 August 2026, Transport for London granted private hire vehicle licences to a number of Wayve's autonomous cars, a key regulatory milestone for the British artificial intelligence company and its partner Uber as they prepare to launch the capital's first robotaxi service.
The vehicles at the heart of the service are all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E cars, fitted with the Wayve AI Driver alongside surround cameras and radar. Although the cars are licensed to drive autonomously, they will not be empty at first. Each ride will carry a trained, TfL-licensed private hire driver on board to provide oversight and act as a backup during the initial phase.
Public appetite appears strong. In the eight weeks before the announcement, more than 100,000 Londoners signed up to an Interest List to be among the first to try the service. A select group of those members will be offered early trips later this summer, giving feedback on the experience before the service opens to a wider public audience.
What makes Wayve different
Founded in 2017, Wayve has built its reputation on a distinct approach to autonomous driving. Rather than relying on detailed pre-mapped routes, its system, which the company calls AV2.0, uses an embodied form of artificial intelligence that learns from experience much like a human driver does, interpreting sensor data on the fly to make decisions.
The company argues that this method allows its cars to adapt to unfamiliar roads, unexpected vehicles and changing weather conditions without needing a bespoke high-definition map for every location. In theory, that makes the technology easier to scale, and Wayve has already set its sights on expansion to Tokyo and around ten further cities after London.
The regulatory road
The TfL licence matters because it brings the service within the same framework that governs London's existing private hire trade, rather than treating it as a purely experimental trial. The wider deployment is also subject to the United Kingdom's Automated Vehicles Act, the landmark legislation that entered into force in 2024 to set the ground rules for self-driving cars.
Both partners framed the approval as a turning point. Sarah Gates, Wayve's vice president of global affairs and assurance, said the licence was an important step towards giving Londoners the chance to experience autonomous driving technology. Annie Duvnjak, Uber's global head of autonomous mobility operations, called it a key milestone in bringing autonomous rides to London on Uber.
A crowded race

Wayve is not alone in eyeing the British capital. Alphabet's Waymo has also signalled plans to bring its robotaxis to London, while China's Baidu, working with Lyft, is preparing its own European push. The competition underlines how London has become a strategic prize, with several players racing to claim the title of Europe's first commercial autonomous taxi service.
For Uber, the tie-up is part of a broader strategy to fold autonomous vehicles into its ride-hailing platform rather than be displaced by them. By offering driverless trips alongside its network of human drivers, the company hopes to control how the technology reaches passengers, using its app and its Interest List to manage demand as the rollout begins.
What comes next
The immediate path is deliberately cautious. The service will start with a safety operator behind the wheel, and only later progress to fully driverless operation, for which neither company has given a firm timeframe. This incremental approach is designed to build public trust and gather real-world data before the human backup is finally removed from the vehicles.
The stakes stretch well beyond a single city. Success in London would position Britain as a serious testbed for autonomous mobility in Europe, while raising familiar questions about jobs, safety and public acceptance. The coming weeks will show whether the promise of a summer launch translates into paying passengers, and whether Londoners are ready to hail a car that can drive itself.
