The United Kingdom is steadily cementing its position as one of the world's leading nations in quantum computing and advanced technology. Through a combination of sustained government funding, ambitious private investment and a thriving ecosystem of innovative companies, the country is placing itself firmly at the forefront of one of the most transformative technological fields of the coming decades.
A national quantum strategy
At the heart of the United Kingdom's efforts lies a long term commitment to quantum research. The National Quantum Strategy, launched in 2023, committed 2.5 billion pounds over a period of ten years. This followed an earlier phase of the National Quantum Technologies Programme, which had already provided 1 billion pounds in funding between 2019 and 2024.
This strategic approach has helped build a remarkably dense ecosystem across the country. There are now 109 quantum companies and organisations tracked in the United Kingdom, spread across more than ten active cities. London stands out as the main hub, hosting 47 companies, and confirming the capital's central role in the nation's quantum ambitions and technological development.
Leading companies and achievements
The British quantum sector is home to several world leading companies. Quantinuum, based in Cambridge and formed through a merger in 2021, holds the record for the highest two qubit gate fidelity among all publicly benchmarked quantum computers, reaching a remarkable 99.97 per cent. The company also demonstrated 48 verified logical qubits using a color code on 98 physical qubits.
Beyond Quantinuum, the landscape features a range of pioneering firms. Riverlane, also based in Cambridge, specialises in quantum error correction software, while Oxford Quantum Circuits, based in Reading, raised 100 million dollars in a Series B round in 2023. In London, ORCA Computing has demonstrated up to 90 programmable photonic modes, pushing the boundaries of the technology.
Other companies are also making significant strides in the field. Quantum Motion, operating between London and Oxford, has raised more than 40 million pounds to develop silicon spin qubits. Meanwhile, Universal Quantum, based in Brighton, secured 4.5 million pounds in seed funding, illustrating the breadth and depth of the innovation taking place across the United Kingdom.
A landmark tech pact

A major boost to the sector came through a landmark technology agreement between the United Kingdom and the United States. Known as the Tech Prosperity Deal, the pact covers artificial intelligence, quantum computing and nuclear energy, and includes the establishment of a joint quantum taskforce to accelerate adoption across healthcare, defence, finance and energy sectors.
The agreement brought with it substantial financial commitments, with a total private investment of 31 billion pounds. Among the largest contributions, Microsoft pledged 22 billion pounds for cloud and AI infrastructure, while Google committed 5 billion pounds. Other major investors included CoreWeave with 1.5 billion pounds and Salesforce with 1.4 billion pounds through 2030.
Building world class infrastructure
The investment is set to translate into some of the most powerful technology infrastructure in the country. Microsoft is building what has been described as the United Kingdom's largest AI supercomputer, featuring over 23,000 advanced graphics processors. In parallel, plans call for the deployment of 120,000 advanced GPUs from NVIDIA across the country.
Google is also contributing to this expansion with a new data centre in Hertfordshire, while a partnership involving CoreWeave and the Scottish firm DataVita will see the construction of a large AI data centre powered by renewable energy. These projects together form the backbone of the United Kingdom's growing computational capabilities and technological reach.
A strong foundation for the future
The recent commitments build on an already impressive record of investment in the sector. The government noted that 44 billion pounds had already flowed into the nation's artificial intelligence and technology sector in recent years, underlining the sustained momentum behind the country's push to remain competitive at the global level in these fields.
