At the heart of Isomorphic's approach lies a technological pedigree that few rivals can match. Its proprietary pipeline is built atop the foundation of AlphaFold 3, the protein-structure prediction system co-developed with Google DeepMind and unveiled in a Nature publication in 2024, which transformed scientists' ability to model the machinery of life.

The company has extended that base with its own Isomorphic Labs Drug Design Engine, known as IsoDDE. This system is designed to deliver predictive accuracy for molecular interactions, enabling what the company calls rational drug design for complex biological systems, rather than the slow trial-and-error that has long characterised pharmaceutical research.

In practical terms, the ambition is to predict how a candidate molecule will behave inside the body before it is ever synthesised in a laboratory. If it works reliably, such a capability could compress years of painstaking experimentation into computational steps, dramatically lowering the cost and risk of bringing a new therapy forward.

From prediction to patients

The crucial test now is whether these digital predictions can translate into real medicines. The company is targeting its first human clinical trials by late 2026, a milestone that would move the entire field from theory into clinical reality and provide the first hard evidence of whether the approach truly works.

Notably, this timeline has already slipped once, as earlier expectations had pointed to an end of 2025 target. These partnerships offer real-world validation opportunities and pathways to apply the platform across diverse disease portfolios, while the company simultaneously advances its own wholly owned drug candidates.

Why it matters

For the United Kingdom, Isomorphic Labs is more than a single well-funded startup; it is a test case for whether the country can turn its world-class AI research into globally significant companies rather than merely exporting talent and ideas abroad, as has too often happened in the past.

The coming months will therefore be watched closely far beyond the technology world.
